NOAA’s Initial 2025 Forecast: Another Active Hurricane Season Ahead

NOAA has released its 2025 Atlantic hurricane season outlook, calling for an above-normal level of activity. With the season officially running from June 1 to November 30, NOAA anticipates:

  • 13 to 19 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher)

  • 6 to 10 hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher)

  • 3 to 5 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4, or 5; winds of 111 mph or higher)

This outlook reflects a 60% chance of an above-average season, surpassing the typical average of 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.

The forecast for increased activity is due to several contributing factors: continued ENSO-neutral conditions, warmer-than-average ocean temperatures, weak wind shear, and a potentially active West African monsoon. These conditions favor storm formation and intensification.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center will update the 2025 Atlantic seasonal outlook in early August, prior to the historical peak of the season.
